Sacha Inchi Oil vs. Powder: What's the Difference?
Published on May 17, 2024 · By Caleb Lim, Founder · Asia Eco Farm
Sacha Inchi is an extraordinarily versatile seed, but when it is processed, it primarily yields two very distinct superfood ingredients: Extra Virgin Sacha Inchi Oil and Defatted Sacha Inchi Protein Powder. Understanding the difference is crucial for formulators and health enthusiasts alike.
The Oil: The Omega Champion
When Sacha Inchi seeds are cold-pressed, the resulting golden oil is a nutritional powerhouse. It is highly concentrated in essential fatty acids—specifically Omega-3 (ALA).
- Best For: Softgel supplements, cosmetic formulations, salad dressings, and functional foods.
- Primary Benefit: Cardiovascular support, anti-inflammatory properties, and cognitive health.
The Powder: The Complete Plant Protein
After the oil is extracted, the remaining "seed cake" is finely milled into a highly digestible powder. This powder contains about 60% complete protein, meaning it has all 9 essential amino acids.
- Best For: Sports nutrition, meal replacement shakes, energy bars, and vegan baking.
- Primary Benefit: Muscle recovery, satiety, and clean, allergen-free plant protein.
The Verdict
Neither is "better" than the other; they serve completely different, yet complementary purposes. In fact, many wellness brands create a dual-product line utilizing both the oil for omegas and the powder for protein!
Processing Method: How Each Product is Made
Understanding the processing difference helps formulators choose the right grade for their application:
Cold-Pressed Oil: The whole dried Sacha Inchi seeds are fed into a cold-press expeller at controlled temperatures (below 40°C). Cold-pressing preserves the heat-sensitive fatty acids, Vitamin E, and antioxidant compounds. The resulting oil is golden-green in colour with a mild, nutty taste. No solvents are used — unlike hexane-extracted oils, cold-pressed Sacha Inchi oil carries no solvent residue risk. The leftover seed cake after pressing becomes the raw material for protein powder.
Defatted Protein Powder: The seed cake from cold-pressing is dried and milled into a fine powder. Because the majority of the oil has been extracted, the powder is concentrated in protein — approximately 60% by weight. A small amount of residual fat remains (typically 5–8%), which contributes the mild omega-3 content and flavour profile that distinguishes Sacha Inchi powder from zero-fat protein concentrates.

Choosing the Right Format for Your Product
The decision between oil and powder ultimately comes down to what health claim you want to lead with and what product format your customer will use:
- Lead with Omega-3 / cardiovascular health → choose the oil. Available as a softgel supplement, liquid dropper, or culinary oil. EU Novel Food authorisation covers the oil only, making it the compliant choice for EU-market products (as of 2026).
- Lead with protein / sports nutrition → choose the powder. Complete amino acid profile, allergen-free, mixes well into shakes and bars. Note: EU Novel Food status does not currently cover Sacha Inchi protein — check with your EU regulatory counsel before launching in that market.
- Lead with cosmetic / skin benefits → choose the oil. Non-comedogenic, high Vitamin E, fast-absorbing. The oil grade for cosmetics is the same ingredient as the supplement grade but sourced to cosmetic specification (INCI name: Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil).
- Want to offer both → consider a dual-SKU range. Several wellness brands run a Sacha Inchi oil softgel and a Sacha Inchi protein powder as a complementary duo, allowing customers to address both their omega and protein needs with a single brand.
